  26.    A very proper difference is here made between houses in a
  27.    city and houses in the country.  The former might be redeemed
  28.    any time in the course of a year; but after that time could
  29.    not be redeemed, or go out with the Jubilee:  the latter
  30.    might be redeemed at any time; and if not redeemed must go
  31.    out with the jubilee.  The reason in both cases is
  32.    sufficiently evident; the house in the city might be built
  33.    merely for the purposes of trade or traffic--the house in the
  34.    country was builded on, or attached to, the inheritance which
  35.    God had divided to the respective families.  It was therefore
  36.    necessary that the same law should apply to the house as to
  37.    the inheritance; which necessity did not exist with regard to
  38.    the house in the city.  And, as the house in the city might
  39.    be purchased for the purpose of trade, it would be very
  40.    inconvenient for the purchaser, when his business was

  139.    must have served, from that time till the jubilee; and then
  140.    taking the current wages of a servant, per year, at that
  141.    time, multiply the remaining years by that sum, and the
  142.    aggregate was to be given to his master for his redemption.

  155.    It was calculated to prevent the rich from oppressing the

  158.    mortgage, or usurpation.  It was further intended, that debts
  159.    should not be multiplied too much, lest the poor should be
  160.    entirely ruined; that slaves should not always continue in
  161.    servitude; that personal liberty, equality of property, and
  162.    the regular order of families might, as much as possible, be
  163.    preserved; and that the people might thus be strongly
  164.    attached to their country, lands, and inheritances.
